What is this popular phrase that everyone in fitness claims to be strengthening, but no one really seems to know what it is?
It is the catch phrase for all of fitness and personal training. Everyone wants core stability, and if you are a trainer, surely you strengthen everyone’s core.
Ah, there it is, my core. I have a core. An apple core? The core to the center of the earth? Is it nuclear? Is there a green mush boiling around on the inside or is it a mass of seedpods awaiting release? What does it do? Is it just for looks? Who suddenly discovered the core, because no one ever told me in P. E. that we had a core or needed one? If my core gets out of control, will I become unstable and explode? Or will I bloat out into a big ball and then what part of my brain controls the core of my body and if I get a frontal lobotomy will I still have core stability?
So many questions, so much ridiculous advertising, so little information from so many professionals in the strength and conditioning industry. So, do I dare claim to be able to define this elusive concept over all others who claim to know so much about core stability? Yes... No! All I can really do is explain from our point of view and experience of movement, what, how and where we place and consider this concept called core or core stability in relationship to mobility.
In its simplest form, to us, core stability is not a place or a group of muscles in proximity to the mid section of the body between the rib cage and the pelvis. In our experience, core stability is not a thing to have, but a thing to do. Core stability is an activity, an action involving the body. Everyone who can stand up and walk across a room is doing it. The question is, how active is ones core stabilization and can it be increased for improved awareness and performance in movement.
All fun and sarcasm aside lets talk about our credentials and experience that affords us an opinion on this subject. Read More >>
