The Greater Knowledge of Pilates:
As a movement • As a Discipline • As an Understanding • As a Philosophy
Before you dive into a Pilates education program, you should first determine why this is the path you wish to travel. Why do you want to know more about Pilates and how much do you desire the knowledge. You are about to invest between $400 and $10,000 and commit 2 days, 3 weeks, 6 months, a year, 2 years, 5 years or a lifetime to this education.
If your goal is to become a truly gifted Pilates teacher, then you should be ready to commit a lifetime to the study of this fascinating body of work and philosophy of movement. The movements, “exercises”, or choreography in the Pilates work repertoire can be learned by most, who are willing to dedicate some time and effort in a relatively short period of time. Some programs claim to teach all 500 exercises in the Pilates repertoire. I can’t really speak to that, as I never spent time counting, but I can tell you that none of that has a great deal of meaning until you really explore why and how the movements are significant. Meaning that first and foremost, you have to always approach this work as an attentive and inquisitive student, eager to learn the work in it’s most basic form and then explore the many facets to find the deeper, more intrinsic purpose. This road takes patience and expert guidance, and then a driving desire to share what you discover with others, your future clients; enough that you learn to communicate your passion, knowledge and experience to them. For this to be successful, you must have a genuine interest in who people are and what they are about. Be prepared to teach them from where they are, not from where you want them to be.
This all sounds pretty deep, and if this does not fit you, there is still good news. This path may not be the right one for you, but it is not the only path. If your desire for knowledge is primarily for your own personal growth within the Pilates work and your interested in deepening your own awareness or if you are already in the pursuit of knowledge in a different field, but see value in what a deeper understanding in the Pilates work could bring to your chosen area of study, there are smaller steps that can be taken other than a complete, comprehensive training program, and we can offer that as well.
